Grounding for mental health
Grounding is a way to center yourself by connecting to the earth. There are many ways to ground yourself. Humans have traditionally been much more grounded than we are today. We are indoors much of the day and when we sleep. Even when you can’t get outside you can imagine roots growing from your feet deep into the earth and this will ground you. Holding this image and breathing for a few minutes is most helpful. Check out the recommended videos in my blogs.

Earthing for mental health
Earthing is also a form of grounding but earthing means having direct physical contact with the ground. People have had a lot less contact with the earth since the invention of the rubber soled shoe. The electromagnetic field of the earth is healing for us and can help rebalance our electromagnetic field. Many research studies have found this can reduce inflammation, a common issue in mental illness. Take your shoes off and simply stand in the grass for several minutes. Sitting helps too.

Sound healing for mental health
This uses a variety of music and sounds in different frequencies to change our frequency. A growing amount of data is showing improved depressive and anxiety symptoms with sound therapy. It can also
improve insomnia and some symptoms of schizophrenia. You can find many examples for free on YouTube. I like to search for sound healing for the root chakra. These can help everyone feel more stable, more secure and more solid.

Yoga for mental health
Most people are familiar with yoga poses. But did you know this is only a portion of yoga? Yoga is really about using your breath to expand your consciousness. It has a deep, thousands of years of history in India. It can also help to bring more energy to the body or move the energy through your body to help balance your mind, body, heart and spirit. I have found doing even one yoga pose a day or a brief (3 to 5 minutes) meditation with yoga breathing is helpful.

Sensory modulation for mental health
If you have ever used a fidget toy you have used sensory modulation. There are many tools and techniques you can use to better regulate your nervous system. This is especially helpful for people with autism, a history of trauma or many other mental health conditions. Some people calm better with less stimulation and some with more stimulation. Weighted blankets, noise cancellation headphones and watching/listening to ocean waves are other common examples.

Light therapy for mental health
Light is also something people had more access to before the modern lifestyle has kept us indoors so much. People can become depressed from a lack of light. We can use special light boxes (10,000lux) to help treat depression. Use caution because you can get too much light for some people and it can cause mania. It is good to start with 20 minutes in the morning and work up from there. If your sleep becomes disrupted then cut back or stop using it. Of course, you can do the same with natural sunlight if your lifestyle allows.

What is breaking generational curses
This sounds magical and in some ways it is. But breaking generational curses is really ending the cycle of trauma. In many families abuse happens generation after generation. And not only abuse but the patterns of thought and behavior that go along with abuse. This is how the abuse can “skip a generation” but re-emerge in the next one if the healing has not been done. If you break the generational curse it means you end the cycle of abuse AND heal the patterns of thought and behavior that led to abuse or putting up with abuse. You find a new way to live, in a world of safety and peace

Microbiome and mental health
Microbiome is the bacteria that live in our bodies. Our gut is the center of our microbiome. We are understanding more and more about how bacteria in our gut affect mood and thought. Some studies have shown the bacteria in the guts of people with depression and anxiety are different from those without. We can work on improving our microbiome by adjusting our diet and with probiotics.

Ayurveda and mental health
Ayurveda is a thousands’ year old traditional form of healing from India. It centers around the idea that our gut is the focus of our health. The health of our gut in Ayurveda is deeply connected to our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual selves. We can improve our health by using diet, herbs, yoga and detoxification.
As a form of healing Ayurveda is very complicated and people dedicate their lives to understanding it. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t benefit from understanding its principles and utilizing some of its tools to help in our healing.

Traditional Chinese Medicine & mental health
Traditional Chinese Medicine is an ancient form of healing that is thousands of years old. It operates on the principle that maintaining balance among the body’s opposing forces can heal and ward off illness. These forces, or energies, are known as yin and yang, and they symbolize elements such as the seasons (winter vs. summer), the earth vs. the heavens, and joy vs. sorrow. When the opposite energies are in harmony, you feel calm and full of life. An imbalance can cause illness including mental illness. TCM uses tools like acupuncture, herbs, cupping and QiGong to balance and move the energies. TCM is very complicated and people dedicate their lives to understanding it.
Healing Starts Here
Modern medicine treats short term illness well. But much more is needed
than modern medicine to find recovery from a chronic condition.
