Evidenced based
- Reports say up to 60 to 75% of people have some kind of fear of the dentist while 1 to 5% have full blown dental phobia.
- Prevalence of dental anxiety has not changed markedly in the last 30 years, despite more modern and less painful dental technology.
- A study that included 2264 participants found people listed the sound of dental drilling as the highest cause of fear in dental patients. Tranquil dentistry includes handpicked sound therapy, ASMR, affirmations, etc. that can alleviate this stress while covering the sound of the drill with sounds that will also calm.
- This same study found pain to be the second most common cause of dental fear. Tranquil dentistry includes acupressure, cold packs, sound healing and other interventions that can help reduce pain.
- Multi-sensory environments have been successfully used in dental practices with adults and children with neurological deficits.
- Multi-sensory environments have been shown to reduce mental stress and anxiety in neurologically healthy individuals.
- These same environments have been successful in reducing pain in labor and delivery in neurotypical patients. Tranquil dentistry brings directly to the patient, the types of sensory tools used in these types of sensory environments.
- The non-sensory modalities included in the Richard’s Method have evidence showing they reduce sympathetic tone/increase parasympathetic tone, reduce the hormonal stress response and/or reduce inflammation.
